In memoriam: Esbjorn Svensson [1964-2008]

Ένας απο τους σημαντικότερους Ευρωπαίους jazzίστες έφυγε πρόωρα απο τη ζωή την προηγούμενη εβδομάδα. Ο Σουηδός πιανίστας Esbjorn Svensson, bandleader του esbjorn svenson trio ή e.s.t. όπως ήταν πιο γνωστό, πνίγηκε σε ατύχημα κατάδυσης. Η δουλειά του με τους e.s.t. θεωρείται απο τις πιο "φρέσκες" απόψεις για την σύγχρονη jazz.

soul survivor

Με την ευκαιρία της κυκλοφορίας του best of του Bobby Womack με τίτλο "The Best of Bobby Womack: The Soul Years", το allaboutjazz ετοίμασε ένα πολύ καλό αφιέρωμα στον μεγάλο soulman, γνωστότερο έργο του οποίου είναι μάλλον το ost του "Accross 110th Street".

Εδώ το κείμενο στο οποίο μαθαίνουμε εκτός των άλλων, την ενδιαφέρουσα πληροφορία οτι η καριέρα του σχεδόν καταστράφηκε όταν παντρεύτηκε την γυναίκα του, μέντορά του, Sam Cooke μόλις εκείνος δολοφονήθηκε. O tempora, o mores!

Herbie and Wayne!

Δύο απο τις μεγαλύτερες μορφές τις jazz έκλεισαν για συναυλίες στην Ελλάδα! O Wayne Shorter και ο Herbie Hancock θα δώσουν απο μια συναυλία με τα κουαρτέτα τους στο Μέγαρο Μουσικής. Τα λόγια είναι περιττά, να σημειώσω μόνο οτι και οι δυο συμμετείχαν σε ένα απο τα σημαντικότερα jazz groups, το δεύτερο μεγάλο κουιντέτο του Miles (μαζί με τον Tony Williams στα ντραμς και τον Ron Carter στο μπάσο) και έπαιξαν τεράστιο ρόλο στην εξέλιξη της jazz και της σύγχρονης μουσικής γενικότερα...

Νομίζω οτι παραληρώ απο την ανυπομονησία!

Ο Miles λίγο προτού μας αφήσει ερμήνευσε live στο Montreux (με τον Quincy Jones στο ρόλο του μαέστρου) το Boplicity, ένα απο τα κομμάτια του πρώτου του αριστουργήματος "The Birth of the Cool" με ενορχήστρωση Gil Evans.

john coltrane quartet - afro blue

Η απίστευτη κομματάρα Afro Blue του Mongo Santamaria όπως την έπαιξε ο John Coltrane με τον McCoy Tyner, τον Jimmy Garrison και τον Elvin Jones κάπου μέσα στο 1963.

Αυτό το κουαρτέτο ήταν μαγικό. Μαγικό.

Ως είδηση έχει κάνει ήδη τον γύρο του κόσμου, αλλά το ανεβάζω κι εγω. Για τους Beatles (τον έναν έστω) θα κάνουμε τα στραβά μάτια.

Paul McCartney returned to Liverpool on the 41st anniversary of the release of the Beatles’ “Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band” for a concert in which he saluted former songwriting partner John Lennon by singing “A Day in the Life,” while Lennon’s widow, Yoko Ono, looked on from the audience.

It was, according to McCartney’s spokesman, the first time he has sung the album-closing song that was written primarily by Lennon. McCartney muffed one line midway through the song — ironically, during the brief section of the composition that he wrote. In a clip of the performance posted on YouTube, McCartney chuckles, moves on and then segues into Lennon’s anti-war anthem “Give Peace a Chance.”

McCartney also gave a nod to George Harrison by including “Something,” played on ukulele, Harrison’s instrument of choice for living-room jam sessions. His widow, Olivia, also attended the concert, which drew an estimated 36,000 people to Anfield Stadium. It was the centerpiece of the city’s European Capital of Culture arts series.
