"When Nine Inch Nails first came out in the early '90s, I went to see them a lot. I like the way that dynamics have been magnified by a scale of 10 in the last several years, and they really explored that. When I like something as a fan, it typically seeps into me and comes out in my music. Even though that piece has a connection to rock in a pretty overt way, what is going on under the hood harmonically and compositionally puts it somewhere else. I don't even know what kind of music you would actually call that, which is almost always a good thing."
